The diplomas from the 11th master class in radio journalism of the Bulgarian National Radio – BNR Academy were awarded at a solemn ceremony on November 14. The lectures and practical classes in modern forms of radio journalism build on the professional knowledge and skills of active journalists in the national and regional programs of the public radio.

"Although we work in different places in different programs, we have always helped each other. Thank you for your participation and I hope that everything you have learned here will be successfully applied in the future at the BNR," said one of the lecturers – Zlatko Zhelev, head of the department in the Digital Programs Directorate of the BNR, at the opening of the solemn ceremony.

The diplomas for successfully completed master class were awarded by Dimitar Abrashev, a member of the BNR's Management Board, with the words:

Dimitar Abrashev (right)"Thank you for joining this master class. We learned something from you, and you learned something from us. There is hope in journalism, and anyone who says that journalism is dying as a profession is deeply mistaken. They only need to get to know each of you and refute themselves."

Among the seven BNR journalists who graduated, selected through a competition for training under the program of the qualification department of the European Union for Radio and Television EBU ACADEMY, is Radio Bulgaria's news editor Ivo Ivanov.

A historian by education, creator of television programs on history and tourism, author of some of Radio Bulgaria's most intriguing materials related to Bulgarian history, with a special interest in the Balkan region, part of the news team of Radio Bulgaria, Ivo Ivanov has many years of experience in the journalistic profession. However, he is convinced that one can always learn something new:

"I learned a lot about working with sound. In a radio, sound is everything, so that was very useful to me. I got updated on quite a few new modern things that are entering the media, such as artificial intelligence. I admit that I am impressed and even worried. The cases that were presented to us were interesting - freedom of the media, the actions of journalists under pressure when they are subjected to such pressure, etc. There are things that one always needs to upgrade, because the world is developing. No matter how much we think we are following this development, we are often lagging behind the events," admits Ivo Ivanov.

Having successfully completed 12 different disciplines related to technical skills, news gathering, ethics, reporting in the digital age, etc., having put his heart and soul into upgrading his skills and being useful to the radio medium, Ivo recommends that all colleagues be active and join the next master classes in radio journalism at the Bulgarian National Radio:

"Instead of hesitating – do it! At first glance, the BNR Academy is a commitment, but it is organized so dynamically that one very quickly gets used to the environment, to the tasks that are set. They are not some unachievable ones, but are directly related to our work. So it is very interesting."

The BNR Academy in Radio Journalism is also developing and is already waiting for its new participants – but this time they will be chosen among students from the Faculty of Journalism of Sofia University. Thus, the Bulgarian National Radio will really contribute to the formation of the new generation of journalists in the country.  "I sincerely hope that we will see some of these colleagues in our team in the near future," is the wish of Zlatko Zhelev.
