Third preliminary vote for UN Secretary General due on 29 August

The third preliminary vote in the procedure for the election of the new United Nations Secretary General will be held at the Security Council on 29 August, Ramlan Bin Ibrahim, Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the UN and chairing the Security Council, has been quoted as saying by TASS and BTA. During the previous vote held on 5 August, former Portuguese PM Antonio Guterres rankled first with eleven "encourage" votes, two "discourage" votes and two "no opinion" ones. Second was former Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic with eight "encourage" votes, four "discourage" votes and three no opinion" ones. Next in the ranking came Argentine Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra, former Slovenian President Danilo Turk and Bulgarian Irina Bokova, who is UNESCO’s Director-General. Under current rules in order to be approved the candidate should receive nine “encourage” votes, including all five votes of the five permanent Security Council members – the United States, China, Russia, France and the United Kingdom. After that the candidate should be presented for approval at the United Nations General Assembly.
