First festival of fire and fire-dancing held in Sofia

The first festival of fire and fire-dancing is taking place in front of the Monument to the Soviet Army in Sofia on Saturday between 5 and 10 pm. The initiative is dedicated to May 21-the Feast of St. Constantine and Helena  and the day of the nestinars (fire-dancers). Eight or nine fire-dancers are dancing over 4 fires, the President of the Bulgarian Art Folklore Center Nestiya Hristo Stankov, who is one of the organizers of the festival, told the Bulgarian National Radio. The main purpose of the festival is to show the visitors that ancient Bulgarian custom and cleanse people’ souls through fire, because we have witnessed a lot of negativism in our society in the recent years, Hristo Stankov further said.
