National Council of BSP approves party-proposed bill on mixed electoral system

The Bulgarian Socialist Party's bill on the introduction of a mixed electoral system in the country was approved by the party's National Council and its parliamentary group will submit it to the National Assembly. The bill stipulates that 120 MPs shall be elected following the majority voting system and the remaining 120 - the proportional representation system.

Earlier, BSP MP Tasko Ermenkov stated:

"Whether it is suitable for Bulgaria or not will become clear when we submit it for discussion. I think that the people have shown us unequivocally that the way we have been elected so far is not the way they want. At the same time we must keep in mind the interests of the Bulgarian nation, so as not to turn the country into a feudal court belonging to a handful of MPs elected for reasons unknown by force of a 100 percent majority representation system.”

Former BSP leader Mihail Mikov:

"It is very ambitious for a law comprising 400 texts to change the entire system just by amending some of the texts. This will create a host of problems if it is approved at all. What happens to a small country when you copy France, Germany, will the system be able to function in the conditions of Bulgaria?”
