The lack of moratorium on new medications and therapies would cause imbalance in the country’s health budget, Deputy Minister of Health Boyko Penkov told the Bulgarian National Radio on Sunday on occasion of the decision of Bulgaria’s head of state Rumen Radev to impose veto on the reimbursement of new medicinal products. According to estimates of European health experts, the introduction of the new molecules would cause a budget imbalance to the tune of EUR 50 million. Moreover, our colleagues decided that there are enough modern, alternative and efficient medical therapies that are paid by the National Health Insurance Fund, Deputy Minister Penkov pointed out. A similar moratorium on new medications was introduced in Romania in the past and it lasted for two years. In Poland prices of medications were frozen for 3 years and in Spain prices of medicines were reduced with a royal decree, Boyko Penkov added. The budget of the National Health Insurance Fund has to be amended at the end of 2018, if the current moratorium on new medications and therapies remains, Deputy Minister Penkov categorically said.
