The Bulgarian government has approved a Memorandum for the establishment of an executive council responsible for the Alpine-Western Balkan Rail Freight Corridor.

The main objective of the project is to improve connectivity and commodity exchange with the Western Balkan countries. According to the EC decision of March 2018, the corridor should be operational in two years.

The corridor is part of the European rail network for competitive freight transport, created in 2010, which includes a total of 9 railway lines.
