By 2030, 42 percent of Bulgaria’s population will be concentrated in six cities - Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Ruse and Stara Zagora. At the same time one in five town and village in the country will have been depopulated, indicates a demographic tendency analysis, commissioned by the Friedrich Ebert foundation.
One of the authors of the analysis, Assoc. Prof. Georgi Bardarov says that the biggest problem is that the young are emigrating. “What we need is a complete change, first and foremost – of incomes. A salary of 250-500 euro a month cannot keep young educated people in the country,” Bardarov comments, and adds that at this time, the minimum, psychologically, is 1,000 euro
