Bessarabian Bulgarian among Ukrainian sailors detained by Russia

Vladimir Varimez, a Bessarabian Bulgarian, is among the 24 Ukrainian sailors detained by Russia off the Crimean coast, Viktor Genchev, mayor of Banovka, Ukraine, the village 26-year old Varimez comes from, has confirmed for the Bulgarian National Radio.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry confirmed that a Ukrainian citizen of Bulgarian origin, serving in the Ukrainian army, is among the sailors detained on board one of the three Ukrainian ships trying to cross the Kerch Strait on Sunday, and reiterated Bulgaria’s position that all sailors must be released immediately. If further investigation establishes that the Ukrainian citizen of Bulgarian origin detained has Bulgarian citizenship he will be provided consular protection, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry adds.
