Bulgaria’s Ombudsman Maya Manolova will propose amendments to the Electoral Code that would allow the Bulgarians living in Great Britain to keep their voting rights after a possible Brexit, it became clear at the meeting between Maya Manolova and representatives of the Bulgarian community abroad. The discussion was initiated by a petition signed by over 150 Bulgarians living abroad who asked Bulgaria’s Ombudsman Manolova to protect their voting rights. According to the current Electoral Code, in order to be eligible to vote at European or local elections Bulgarians should have resided in Bulgaria or in other EU member state for at least three months prior to the date of elections. Moreover, polling stations in non-EU countries can be opened in diplomatic and consular offices only, which would impede election process.
