The head of Narcotics Department at the General Directorate Combating Organized Crime and two other people from the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior have been detained, this country’s Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev announced at an extraordinary briefing.
The men are suspected of raising an umbrella over the activity of organized crime groups engaged in trafficking of narcotics in Bulgaria and abroad. The operation was carried out by the special Prosecutor’s Office and the Internal Security Directorate of the Ministry of Interior.
The Prosecutor’s Office and the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior are uncompromising regardless of who breaks the law and in which institution these people are employed at, Ivan Geshev underlined.
The activity of the General Directorate Combating Organized Crime is to be analyzed, this country’s Minister of Interior Mladen Marinov announced.
Later the operation was discussed at a meeting between Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Interior Minister Mladen Marinov. PM Borissov demanded the resignations of the Interior Ministry’s Deputy Chief Secretary Georgi Arabadzhiev and of the director of the General Directorate Combating Organized Crime Ivaylo Spiridonov. After the meeting Arabadzhiev and Spiridonov submitted their resignations.
