We have not alllowed Bulgaria to top the world ranking in terms of Covid-19 mortality. We have been encouraging people to observe the anti-epidemic measures from the very beginning of the pandemic. The high mortality is due to non-compliance with health measures and the fact that some people underestimated the virus and burned masks in front of the Council of Ministers building. It is also due to the great mistrust to the system accumulated over the years, Bulgaria’s Minister of Health Professor Kostadin Angelov said for BTV.

We did not waste even a single day. I held regular meetings with the district crisis headquarters. Organization depended on the available resources in a given district. The shortage of medical staff is the problem. We do not have enough medics. The health system needs to undergo a serious reform, but no public and political consensus was reached for the purpose, Minister Angelov added.
