Mortality in Bulgaria after the 40th week of 2020 has increased sharply, Magdalena Kostova, Head of the Demographic and Social Statistics Directorate at the National Statistical Institute said for BNR.
In November, the weekly mortality rate reached 3,800 cases, or 30 death cases per 1,000 people- the highest mortality registered in the past 5 years. The total mortality rate for 2019 was 15.5 per thousand. By the end of 2020, the total death toll in Bulgaria will be between 120,000 and 125,000, while in 2019 Bulgaria registered 108,000 fatalities.
The high mortality rate in Bulgaria is due to ageing population, emigration and low birthrate, Magdalena Kostova noted.
