Rapid antigen testing will not replace PCR tests at borders

Reiterating expectations of a new third wave of coronavirus, Bulgaria’s Chief Health Inspector Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev has told BNT that very often pandemics occur in two or three waves. This had been observed in bird and swine flu, as well as in Spanish flu.

Speaking about calls for the introduction of antigen tests for those arriving from abroad, Kunchev said that the PCR test was the golden standard. If we want to make sure that we do not miss a case, this is the test that gives us a full guarantee. Rapid tests are for the convenience of citizens, but when it comes to border control purposes there are very few countries that accept rapid tests. Most require PCR tests and for the time being this will remain so.
