The memory of the victims of the communist regime was honored with a procession from the town of Lovech (Central North Bulgaria) to the labor camp "Sunny Beach" and a memorial ceremony at the former stone quarry of the communist camp. "These camps were used by the regime to dehumanize people and instill fear in them" said historian Lyudmila Branekova. Eighty-one-year-old Kolyo Vutev from the village of Toros (Lovech district) said: "Do you see this pit? It was dug only with bare hands. Every second spent here was a pure tragedy."
The Sunny Beach labor camp was opened in 1959 and closed in 1962. 166 people were transferred from Belene concentration camp to Sunny Beach labor camp during that time. Almost 1,500 people were sent to the labor camp and 155 were overworked to death or killed.
