The seasonal conservation of the mosaics of the emblematic monument on Bulgaria’s Buzludzha peak is over. During the cold months, they will be protected with a special canopy of 600 square metres.
A team from the Buzludzha Project Foundation has been working on the restoration of the monument from the time of the Socialism in Bulgaria. The work of wrapping the mosaics was extremely difficult due to the strong wind and low temperatures.
"These are 1000 square meters of mosaic - one of the largest mosaic works in Europe, by the best Bulgarian authors. The subject matter is exceptional, the art is exceptional and it is important to preserve it for future generations," Architect Dora Ivanova told the Bulgarian National Radio.
There is a technical possibility for the monument to be open to visitors next spring, Architect Dora Ivanova suggested. She added that in the last year, 50,000 people have visited the historic landmark. These people want to come in and pay an entrance fee. And this is a way in which further activities for its preservation can be financed, the Buzludzha Foundation hopes.
