Age of childbearing in Bulgaria increases

58,393 babies were born in Bulgaria in 2021, including 29,921 baby boys and 28,472 baby girls. Sofia tops the ranking with 13,168 newborn babies and Vidin is at the bottom of the ranking with only 525 babies born last year, data of the National Statistical Institute published on the occasion of the Day of Maternity Care and Midwives indicate.

According to preliminary data, in 2020 there were 1,766 obstetricians and 3,251 midwives in Bulgaria. The latest data of NSI shows that the age of childbearing has increased. In 1996, the average age of first-time mothers was 22.4 years. In 2005, the average age of first-time mothers increased to 25.2 years and in 2020 it reached 27.5 years.
