Despite the grim epidemic situation, in December 2021 foreign travel by Bulgarians stood at 104.5% compared to registered travel in December 2020, indicate latest National Statistical Institute data, according to which a total of 551,000 Bulgarians travelled abroad during the last month of 2021.
At the same time the number of visits by foreign nationals to Bulgaria was 475,100 or 92.4% more than in December 2020. The share of transit travel is 54.2%. Out of all foreign nationals who visited Bulgaria in December 2021, the share of EU citizens is 41.9%, or 199,000. The biggest number of visits were paid by citizens of Romania - 38.4%, Greece - 22.8% and Germany - 10.1%.
232,200 is the number of visits by citizens of other European countries, or 48.9% of all visits to Bulgaria, the list being topped by Turkey with 129,000 or 55% of all visits in this group. In December 2021, the relative share of visits for some purpose is 61.4% - 25% for holidays, and 13.6% for business.
