Izvorite ("The Springs") park by the town of Kotel hosts the Ethnicity, Colour and Kotel Carpet Fest for the sixth time. The festival celebrates diversity, presenting of the lifestyle, culture and folklore of different ethnic groups in the region.
The carpet exhibition showcases the incredible dexterity and artistry of the Kotel carpet weavers, their carpets being second to none with their bright colors and beautiful designs. Visitors can trace how the carpet is made from the very beginning - the tapping of wool, its spinning and dyeing, to its weaving.
The demonstrations also involve the child students of veteran carpet maker Velichka Sabotinova. According to her, weaving is a time-consuming labour-intensive craft and people quickly give up, so nowadays it has been preserved mainly as a hobby. Ukrainian and Turkish women have more interest and perseverance to learn, Velichka notes. Ukrainian women really like weaving, she adds. The carpet weaver is ready to pass on her craft to those who will do it with all their heart.
