New tobacco varieties introduced in Bulgaria because of climate change

Climate change is strongly affecting agriculture in Bulgaria, including tobacco production. That is why varieties are being sought that are able to cope with dry and hot summers. Recently, the National Association of Tobacco Growers-2010 in Bulgaria, together with international organizations, launched an experimental project for growing new varieties of large-leaf tobacco in this country.

The idea is to adapt the tobacco production to climate change such as drought, high temperatures and low soil moisture, as well as to ensure better economic sustainability for the sector. The project has a two-year horizon and includes three new varieties of tobacco that have not been used in Bulgaria so far.

The new tobacco raw material is aimed at producing smokeless products that are quickly entering the European and world markets. The project is also being implemented in other European countries, with some already reporting positive results, while others abandoned it due to unsuitable climate and soils, BNR-Kardzhali reports.
