The seaside Atanasovsko lake is located near Bulgaria's Burgas. On August 12, 1980, the nearly 9 km-long lake was declared a national reserve, with the aim of protecting and conserving the rare species of birds that inhabit it. Today, the northern part is a maintained reserve, the southern part is a protected area, and the entire area of the lake and the agricultural lands around it have been declared a Natura 2000 area under the Birds and Habitats Directive. ‎

For more than 20 years, the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation and the Regional Environment and Water Inspection in Burgas have been organizing a special Salt Fair around the date of the declaration of Lake Atanasovsko as a reserve.

This year's event is on August 13 at 4 p.m., and a special emphasis will be placed on green salt - the newest product from the lagoon. What is it made of, why is it "salt without salt", what is the source of its rich green colour - these are just some of the questions that visitors will receive answers to at the salty event, the foundation promises.‎

The fair will also showcase artisanal chocolate with sea salt from the lake, cosmetics with natural products and, of course, the different types of salt that are mined locally. ‎
