The seaside Atanasovsko lake is located near Bulgaria's Burgas. On August 12, 1980, the nearly 9 km-long lake was declared a national reserve, with the aim of protecting and conserving the rare species of birds that inhabit it. Today, the northern part is a maintained reserve, the southern part is a protected area, and the entire area of the lake and the agricultural lands around it have been declared a Natura 2000 area under the Birds and Habitats Directive.
For more than 20 years, the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation and the Regional Environment and Water Inspection in Burgas have been organizing a special Salt Fair around the date of the declaration of Lake Atanasovsko as a reserve.
This year's event is on August 13 at 4 p.m., and a special emphasis will be placed on green salt - the newest product from the lagoon. What is it made of, why is it "salt without salt", what is the source of its rich green colour - these are just some of the questions that visitors will receive answers to at the salty event, the foundation promises.
The fair will also showcase artisanal chocolate with sea salt from the lake, cosmetics with natural products and, of course, the different types of salt that are mined locally.
