The European Commission will support Bulgaria in the gas negotiations

The European Commission will support Bulgaria in the negotiations with natural gas suppliers, said the General Director of the Energy Directorate in the EC, Ditte Juul Jørgensen, in a video conference call with Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister Hristo Alexiev and Energy Minister Rosen Hristov. Brussels representatives agreed on the need for enhanced regional cooperation in order to diversify the supply of energy carriers through pipelines and terminals for liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Alexiev emphasized that Bulgaria's caretaker cabinet did not intend to hold talks on a new short-term, medium-term or long-term contract with Gazprom Export, but only to receive quantities under the existing contract.

The EC representatives were also familiarized with the cabinet's approach to securing natural gas supplies. One of the measures foresees the announcement of an international tender for long-term supplies of liquefied natural gas - the procedure will be started by the caretaker government, and the decision to conclude a contract will be made by a regular cabinet.
