NSI- 84.6% of the population identify themselves as Bulgarians, 71.5%- as Christians

In Bulgaria’s September 2021 national census, a total of 5 118 494 people (84.6%) identified themselves as Bulgarians, the National Statistical Institute announced. 508 378, or 8.4%, identified themselves as ethnic Turks. 266 720 (4.4%) identified themselves as Roma- the third largest ethnic group in the country.

5 037 607 people (85.3%) said that their mother tongue is Bulgarian. 514 386 people (8.7%) said their mother tongue is Turkish and 227 974 people (3.9%) said that their mother tongue was Romani.

4,219,270 (71.5%) identified themselves as Christians, 638,708 (10.8%) identified themselves as Muslims and 1,736 people (0.02%)  identified themselves as Jews.
