"Development and Promotion of Bulgarian Studies Abroad" is a three-year national scientific programme, explains its coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elka Traykova.
The programme is intended to be used in state institutions, where interest in the subject is strong. The programme envisages the development of an online platform for translation from and into Bulgarian by 2025 and the creation of an online portal with resources in the field of Bulgarian language studies. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elka Traykova points out that Bulgarian studies abroad encompasses not only the study of the Bulgarian language in foreign universities, but also Bulgarian literature, history and culture.
"Unfortunately, in the last three decades the interest in these studies in large universities has significantly decreased, the number of lecturers and students was on the decline," added Ms. Traykova. Her explanation is that one of the reasons for this is the generally lower interest in the languages of smaller nations. According to a survey, there are currently 207 Bulgarian studies specialists working abroad - 171 in Europe, 20 in Asia and 16 in North America.
