The expansion of Bulgaria‘s sole gas storage facility in Chiren (Vratsa district) has begun. Most of the funding will be provided from US government institutions, said Vladimir Malinov, Executive Director of Bulgartransgaz.
The project aims to increase the daily withdrawal capacity to 10 million cubic meters. Daily injection is expected to increase to 8 million cubic meters. The facility will be able to store 1 billion cubic meters of gas after the expansion. According to Bulgaria’s Minister of Energy Rosen Hristov, this would allow Bulgaria to store gas approximating one-third of its annual consumption and will ensure energy security in the event of major disruptions of gas supplies.
