The first Bulgarian Orthodox church in Africa, named after the heavenly protector of Bulgaria St. Ivan of Rila, was consecrated in Midrand near Johannesburg.

The ceremony in the South African town was attended by President Rumen Radev who thanked our compatriots for continuing to cherish Bulgarian culture, spirit and tradition even though they are thousands of kilometres from their home country. “You are bringing up your children with a love of Bulgaria, a love of the Bulgarian language,” Rumen Radev said. “I do believe that this sacred place will develop into an ever stronger focal point bringing together the Bulgarians from the region.”
