An exhibition dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of the winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine, Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934), was opened today in the Central  lobby of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The opening was attended by the Spanish ambassador to Bulgaria, Alejandro Polanco, and BAS chairman Prof. Julian Revalski.

Santiago Ramón y Cajal is considered the founder of neurology, as his illustrations are still used in medical textbooks today.

The exposition summarizes the world discoveries that brought the scientist the Nobel Prize in 1906 and shows how his contribution helped the development of Bulgarian neuroscience. Furthermore, the panels reveal his versatile personality – he was also involved in teaching, painting, literature and photography, becoming a pioneer of photographic colour techniques in Spain.
