The last stage of the National Anti-AIDS Campaign continues until August 31, the Ministry of Health has announced. The campaign aims to raise awareness among young people at risk about how HIV spreads and how to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Until the end of August, citizens can get a free test at the regional health inspectorates and the Bulgarian Red Cross Youth.
155,520 people have been tested free of charge and anonymously since the beginning of 2023. 146 HIV-positive persons were registered in the first six months of 2023, bringing their number in Bulgaria to 4,194. 82% of the newly-infected persons are Bulgarians and 18% are foreign nationals. 122 of the newly-infected are men and 24 are women. 89.7% of the newly-registered HIV positive persons became infected through sexual contact, and the rest became infected through injecting drugs. 30–39-year-age group represents the largest portion of reported HIV infection cases.
