The number of people detained in the country's interior increased by 108% in June, July, August and September, National Assembly Speaker Rosen Zhelyazkov told Austrian National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka.

The two politicians inspected the Bulgarian-Turkish border and the state of the border fence. Sobotka praised the Bulgarian authorities for the way they have dealt with the migrant situation. Mr Zhelyazkov told him that 158 000 attempts to cross the Bulgarian-Turkish border had been prevented since the beginning of the year. This shows an increase compared to 2022, when 115,000 were registered.

Bulgaria is making an effort to convince Austria and the Netherlands - the only two countries that currently do not agree to Bulgaria's entry into Schengen - to change their position.
