The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not grant permission for a celebration organized by the Russian Embassy in Sofia. This was announced by the ministry.

The capital's mayor Vasil Terziev said that he had allowed the Russian embassy to mark the Defender of the Fatherland Day on February 23. Russian ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova requested permission from the mayor of Sofia through a special letter sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was also forwarded to the mayor's office,  BGNES reports.

On February 22, in front of the Sofia Municipality, citizens protested because of the permission given to the Russian Embassy to officially celebrate the date in front of the Ossuary Monument in the Lozenets district. Protesters chanted "Mitrofanova and Russian agents out of Bulgaria", "Russia is an empire of evil" and others. Mayor Terziev called on the protesters to go to the Foreign Ministry.
