Food Safety Agency finds no animals infected with plague in Bulgaria

The Bulgarian Food Safety Authority has inspected 551 livestock farms because of outbreaks of plague of small ruminants (peste des petits ruminants) in Romania and Greece. The animals are clinically healthy, but because of the risk of contamination, the enhanced inspections will continue next week, the agency said.

Veterinarians from the regional directorates of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency have examined more than 11 thousand small ruminants kept in 220 settlements. In addition, disinfection has been introduced at all border crossing points because of the risk of disease entry. The agency also reminds that the movement of live animals cannot take place without clinical examinations and PCR tests.

The disease is transmitted from animal to animal and is not dangerous to human health. However, it leads to large economic losses because all animals must be destroyed on a farm if they test positive.
