According to the plan for the development of the electricity transmission network of Bulgaria 2024-2033 of the Electricity System Operator, as of 2033, production from renewable energy sources (RES) will exceed 50% of the projected electricity consumption. The plan has been published for public discussion. According to the EU decarbonisation targets, the plan envisages a gradual increase in electricity consumption for heating, transport, industry and green hydrogen production. In 2033, gross electricity generation is expected to reach 41 400 GWh.

The market modelling of the capacities in the electric energy balances show that coal-fired power plants are experiencing extreme market pressure due to the high cost of carbon emissions. According to the Electricity System Operator this will complicate the production-consumption balance, as well as the options for catering for domestic consumption and possible electricity exports.
