The 90th anniversary of BNR - Radio Varna will be celebrated with a concert tonight at 7pm at the Festival and Congress Centre in the port city of Varna.

The show will feature the incredible BNR Big Band with conductor Strassimir Pavlov and actress and jazz singer Militsa Gladnishka.

On 25 May 1933 the then Radio Club Varna was founded as a section of the Rodno Radio Union. The first test live radio broadcast from Varna was made on 6 January 1934. The official opening of Radio Varna was on 9 December 1934 at 10.30 a.m. with an inauguration and a solemn 5-hour concert in the Saedinenie Hall of the city. The concert was broadcast both on the waves of Radio Varna and by Rodno Radio - Sofia.

In 1935, Tsar Boris III signed a decree that put Rodno Radio under state ownership, marking the beginning of the state radio network in Bulgaria. On 21 May 1936, state-owned Radio Varna began broadcasting as part of Bulgaria's first national radio network.

Radio Bulgaria wishes our colleagues at Radio Varna a happy anniversary!
