Perperikon - the ancient Thracian city near Kardzhali, made it to the top 10 of the world's must-see sites, according to a ranking by the Guardian newspaper. The site is listed alongside Neolithic structures in Spain and France, ancient Roman baths near Florence, the remains of Philippi near Kavala and the Portuguese Stonehenge.

The ranking, published by the English newspaper, highlights ancient sites in Europe that have become favourites among readers. Perperikon, ranked fourth, is described as “a sacred place for gods and humans even before written history, founded by Thracians in the fifth millennium BC, and later hosted Romans, Goths and Bulgarians”.

Hundreds of thousands of visits to the ancient city have been registered since the start of archaeological excavations more than 20 years ago. According to tour guides, The Guardian's assessment is a recognition of the importance of one of Europe’s ancient civilizations.
