Vine growers and winemakers celebrate Trifonovden today

The day of St. Tryphon (1 February old style, 14 February new style) is celebrated by vine growers, falconers and gardeners in Bulgaria.

St. Tryphon is believed to help ward off insects and pests that harm plants. In folklore tradition, the day is celebrated over three consecutive days – 1,2 and 3 February and is known as Trifuntsi. It is the day on which red wine and ritual bread is taken to the vineyards where the vines are pruned for the first time and wine is poured onto them
