Bilingual children returning from abroad should have additional Bulgarian lessons

The Bulgarian education system and the law on preschool and school education do not provide for the so-called language integration, Minister of Education Krasimir Valchev admitted to the relevant parliamentary committee. According to him, this means that if a child returns from abroad, sets foot at the entrance to the school and does not know Bulgarian, he or she should start only with learning the language.

The change in the law has been discussed and will be proposed - if a child does not know Bulgarian, he or she should start only with learning it, Valchev specifies. Experts suggest that this be preceded by a test for the level of knowledge or lack of knowledge of the language.

According to the minister, there should be at least 3 levels for assessing language knowledge - for children who do not know it at all; for others who know little and speak little, and for children with certain language deficits.
