The number of Egyptian children seeking protection in Bulgaria is rising

201,794 foreign citizens with temporary protection resided in Bulgaria by the end of 2024, according to the report of the State Agency for Refugees. Applications for international protection have almost halved, the report shows. In 2024, applications were 12,250 compared to 22,518 in 2023.

The largest drop is seen in applications for protection filed by Afghans - 1,980 people, while a year earlier there were 5,906 applications. The number of refugees from Egypt is rising - from 184 in 2023 to 654. A total of 483 of the Egyptians were also registered as unaccompanied minors.

A total of 4,950 people received international protection in the country last year. Out of 60,864 Ukrainian refugees, only 5,961 rely on the Bulgarian state for accommodation and humanitarian aid.
