Eurogroup recommends Bulgaria adopt euro from 1 January 2026

The Eurogroup has unanimously recommended that Bulgaria become the 21st member of the eurozone. The countries of the common currency area recommend to the EU Council that this should happen from 1 January next year. The finance ministers of the eurozone agreed with the positive assessments provided by the European Commission and the European Central Bank. for the implementation of the requirements by Bulgaria, the Eurogroup said in a statement, quoted by BTA.

On Friday, June 20, the EU Council must approve a letter to the European Council to launch the procedure. Next week, the European Council will discuss the topic, and the process will end on July 8 with a vote on the opinion in the European Parliament and the adoption by the EU Council of the necessary final decisions.

Bulgaria was represented at the meeting in Luxembourg by Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova and BNB Governor Dimitar Radev.

Ahead of the forum, Eurogroup President Paschal Donohoe and Valdis Dombrovskis dismissed concerns that Bulgaria's accession to the eurozone could lead to serious inflation and price increases in the country, citing Sofia's commitment to a sensible and safe budget policy.
