On August 15, Bulgaria marks the Day of Salvation, which pays tribute to the memory of all doctors, nurses, volunteers and citizens who died saving human lives. The date was officially established by a decision of the Council of Ministers in 2012 and with this act Bulgaria became the first country in the EU to officially honour the memory of those who died during rescue operations, according to information on the website of the Ministry of Health.
The initiative is by Dr. Totko Naydenov, editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Bulgarian Doctor", as a sign of respect for the memory of 26-year-old Dr. Stefan Cherkezov, who on August 15, 1963 saved 47 passengers in a burning bus and the next day he died from the severe burns he received.
