From palkenski dialect to standard speech – a Bulgarian language lectureship starts in Timișoara

Timișoara, a large multicultural city in western Romania, is the center of the historical community of the Banat Bulgarians. The members of this community are descendants of settlers from the Bulgarian lands nearly three centuries ago, who have preserved their language and traditions to this day. Now they will have the opportunity to study contemporary standard Bulgarian in an academic environment - at the newly opened Bulgarian language lectureship at the West University of Timișoara.

The courses officially begin on November 24. And although the initiative has existed since 2019, it has not been fully realized until now due to various circumstances. Over the past month, however, interest has grown sharply, and the lectureship has begun attracting an impressive number of applicants. The reason - it is now led by Dr. Svetlana Karadzhova, herself of deep Banat Bulgarian roots, chair of the Association of Banat Bulgarians in Bulgaria, and a highly respected figure within the local community.

What will the students in the new lectureship study?

“They will study the modern standard language, as well as culture, literature, civilization - everything related to the cultural space of the Bulgarians. That is, not only the language, but also general knowledge about Bulgaria,” Dr. Karadzhova tells Radio Bulgaria. “In general, the local Bulgarian community speaks Banat Bulgarian, or "palkenski" - an old form of the language preserved from 300 years ago. For them, transitioning to contemporary Bulgarian will not be difficult, especially for those who have already had contact with the standard language at the Bulgarian school in the town of Stăr Bișnov. They are expected to progress quickly and to be able to use both varieties freely.”

For centuries, various ethnic groups have coexisted in Timișoara - a legacy of the Habsburg and Austro-Hungarian empires. The city joined the Romanian state relatively late and has preserved a distinctly Austro-Hungarian character, with German, Hungarian, and Serbian cultural institutions. The Bulgarian community has left a significant mark on the city’s history  - for example, the most famous mayor, Carol Telbisz, who had Bulgarian roots and governed the city for nearly 30 years. A monument in Timișoara commemorates him, Dr. Karadzhova tells us.

“I would like this Bulgarian language course and the more active communication with Bulgaria to bring more cultural events with Bulgarian participation to this multi-ethnic city. Because this is a place with a German theater, a Serbian theater, and naturally a Romanian theater, along with their schools. Here, the cultures of several peoples are present. Bulgaria could more often organize events or take part in projects in Timișoara. The city has a tradition with the summer Festival of the Hearts, where several Bulgarian folklore ensembles have already participated. More initiatives would strengthen the presence of Bulgarian culture and the self-confidence of the local community.”

As the central city of the Banat region, Timișoara attracts the intellectual elite of every community, and the local Bulgarians are active in all fields - among them there are doctors, surgeons, lawyers, bank directors, teachers, and engineers. This strong presence provides a basis for developing a series of educational initiatives, such as the Bulgarian language lectureship at the West University.

“Life here is very dynamic. I truly don’t have a minute of free time, because people are eager for communication, eager to speak Bulgarian, eager for active cultural presence. And everything we organize and plan - this entire cultural activity - is tied to the language. A richer cultural life requires the development of a richer language. This is what we can wish for the local Bulgarian community as well,” Dr. Svetlana Karadzhova concludes.
