If a referendum on Bulgaria’s membership of the EU were to be held tomorrow, 54 percent of respondents would vote for remaining in the union, the latest Eurobarometer survey on expectations of European citizens shows. This is notably lower than the average for the EU – 64 percent. 17 percent of Bulgarians, and of Europeans, would support their country’s leaving the union. As to the image of the European Parliament, close to half of respondents in Bulgaria, 47 percent, have a positive attitude to that institution, which is 15 percent over the average for the EU – 32 percent. At the same time 59 percent of Bulgarians say they are dissatisfied with the way democracy works in their country. In the EU this percentage stands at 39. Neither Bulgarians /59 percent/, nor Europeans /68 percent/ are inclined to have confidence in political parties.
