The number of complaints against Bulgaria lodged in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has decreased steadily in the recent years. In 2018 a total of 514 complaints were lodged against Bulgaria to ECHR which placed this country 17th in the EU under this indicator. Bulgaria climbed two positions in the ranking as compared to the previous year. The European Court of Human Rights delivered 55 judgements, 27 of which ended with sentences against Bulgaria, 12 ended with acquittals and 13 ended with agreements. In 2017 and 2018 no violations of articles 2 and 3 of the Human Rights Convention (the right to life, prohibition of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment) were found, the annual report approved by the Bulgarian National Assembly reads.
