A male black vulture, released as part of the reintroduction of the species, has managed to find a life partner, who probably comes from the black vulture colony in Dadia National Park in Greece. The new pair was spotted in the Eastern Rhodopes by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, which published the happy news on its Facebook page.
The activities for the reintroduction of the species are carried out by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, within the framework of the EU’s international LIFE program and Rewilding Europe and the project “The Return of Black Vultures to the Rhodopes”, in cooperation with the Rewilding Rhodopes Foundation. According to the foundation, for the past 10 years, over 1,000 red deer and fallow deer have been released in the Eastern Rhodopes region, a herd of almost 20 bison has been created and the population of black vultures has also been restored, in addition to the griffon and Egyptian vultures that inhabit the region.
