Strengthening bilateral economic cooperation between Bulgaria and Italy, participation in joint defense projects and achieving peace in Ukraine were the topics of the meeting between Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome, Bulgarian National Radio special correspondent Tsvetelina Stoyanova reported.

A Bulgarian delegation headed by the prime minister is in the Italian capital on the occasion of May 24 – Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture and of Slavic literature.

“Currently, the bilateral trade turnover is about 6 billion euros, but our ambition is to start serious work on infrastructure projects and that is why we talked about connecting Italian and Bulgarian business. Specifically, we will task the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Energy and the Minister of Defense with joint projects in the defense industry,” Rosen Zhelyazkov told journalists.

During the talks, the Bulgarian Prime Minister also highlighted the possibility of the Holy See mediating in the search for a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Today, Rosen Zhelyazkov will be received in an audience by Pope Leo XIV, after which he will meet with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
