The Sofia City Council will hold another vote to elect its president. This will be its fourth attempt, as the previous three have proved futile. Last week, We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria - Save Sofia, which has the largest group in the municipality, withdrew the candidacy of Boris Bonev, but that too failed to consolidate the votes.
Mayor Vasil Terziev pointed out that despite the differences, Sofia needed a broad coalition and that each political group would have to make compromises. "I urge them to unite as soon as possible for a working majority and the election of a president of Sofia City Council," he said. If the councillors do not find common ground, he said, they will seriously jeopardise important projects for Sofia.
"It is imperative that we put the solution of the city's current and future problems above narrow party interests," the mayor concluded.
